45 RPM Records were developed by RCA in 1948 to replace the 78 RPM record that were common for the first 40 years of recorded music.  Probably the most attractive thing about the 45 was that they were inexpensive in comparison to the price of the LP's (33 1/3 Record)  Introduced by Columbia at the same time.  By the early 50's, standard record players were modified to handle all speeds and sizes through the use of adaptor rings.  This silver 45 RPM adaptor is a small replica of the spindle used in the middle of the 45 vinyl record that helped keep the record in place. 
Although it may not be appreciated by the youth of today, (other than DJ's and the younger music buffs)Those 30 somethings plus will definitely remember and appreciate the joy it brought them in their teen years.   Celebrate the nostalgia of the Music of your youth.
